FifthStitch Plays: Pokemon Go - Selecting which Pokemon to Power Up

Pokemon Go has been out for a couple of days now in the Philippines, but it has been out for more than a month in other countries. Because of this, a lot of information has already been data mined from the game, some of which are hidden from the players. Information like move sets, IVs and others are now becoming public knowledge and could get very intimidating. It becomes quite difficult to decide which Pokemon to pour in all those hard earned candies, as there is just so many variables involved in deciding which Pokemon in your collection really is the best.

I want to try and remedy that. I'm not the best Pokemon Go player, nor am I the most experienced, but I think I've played enough of the game and made my own fair share of mistakes to know the core mechanics of the game. There are still things I do not know (for example, how much do IVs actually affect the performance of my Pokemon in battle), as information regarding these have not been completely confirmed or verified, but basing off of what I and most people who have played the game to a considerable degree know, I think I have come up with a good and relatively painless enough process to determine which Pokemon of a certain species is best to devote candies and stardust powering up.

Here are my 4 (relatively) simple steps to determining which Pokemon to transfer and which Pokemon to train.

Reflections: Three Solid Principles

Today is a rare day for me; I woke up at 6:30 in the morning fresh and energized! Thank God! The mere fact that I woke up that early (yeah, for me that's really early) is a miracle enough, but to feel energized and ready to take on the day is something else all together!

Anyway, because of this, I had time to do laundry and clean up the condominium unit I share with my brothers a little bit more. As I was going through these tasks, I began to think, is there any way for me to more effectively do all these? Can I think of a few basic principles that are general enough that I can apply them to any task or endeavor, but simple enough that anybody wouldn't have a hard time remembering them? This got my gears turning; last faculty Bible Study, we discussed L.A.B.S., which is an acronym I came up with  that stands for Listening, Asking, Believing and Seeking, all good practices for spirit-filled leadership. Can I come up with something as simple as that, but for general tasks?

Well, while I don't claim that what I thought of is as good as L.A.B.S., I think what I came up with is decent enough. It revolves around the principle of before, during and after, what do you do before every task, during every task and after every task. Three simple principles that I think can improve any process, task or endeavor.

Here is what I thought of:

Before: Think before every action. Do not act with ignorance

I have the tendency to wing it, to just go through a task and just let circumstances take its course. It has served me well on occasion, but more often than not, I end up with something mediocre in the end, something I cannot be proud of. The simple solution I can think of for this is to give every action thought. Make sure very action has a purpose. No, you don't have to spend five minutes to thinking about how to do a one minute action (though if it is high risk enough, doing so might be prudent, even necessary), it just means that you must make it a point to be deliberate at all times.

It's trivial to find one self going on auto pilot. It's easy to have the "I've done this task multiple times, I don't need to think about it" mentality. This, I think, however, is very self-destructive. It makes us lazy and complacent, making our actions loose and purposeless. It clouds our ability to look beyond what we are doing, to think about it's consequences in the future, making us short-sighted. Giving every action a little bit of thought and consideration, a little bit of purpose, will go a long way into remedying that.

During: Act with urgency, not with haste

Perhaps due to not really thinking about my actions, I also tend to be lax and slow. During the times when I need to rush or hurry, I do things hastily, ending up with something mediocre. The solution I thought of is to simply act with urgency every time, but not with haste. To have no wasted motion, and connected to the first, to have a purpose for every action.

The simplest way to go about this is to imagine what you would normally ideally do if you have to attend a meeting in an hour. What's the ideal way of going about it? How would you ideally prepare for it? You wouldn't want to rush, or else you'd end up missing a lot of details, but you wouldn't want to be lax as well. You'd want to pace yourself to accomplish as much as you can while still being effective and efficient. This is what I meant with urgency, and I think this will go a long way into remedying laziness and carelessness.

After: Clean up after yourself, as soon as you can

Often, I fall into the trap of simply accomplishing what I have set myself out to do. Like a tornado, I go through my task without thinking about what I leave behind. The solution I thought of for this is to simply take that extra minute to clean up after yourself. Are we really too busy that we cannot take the extra minute to clean up after our actions? And yet we still have time for recreation; games, gym or simply dilly dallying around. No, I don't think we are, and even on those occasions where we absolutely cannot be bothered to clean up immediately, these occasions are what they are, occasions, and if we do find ourselves perpetually in this state, then we might be taking up more than we could handle (which the first principle and second principle solves quite handily).

I think a good measure of our efficiency isn't only how much we have accomplished, but how cleanly we do it. Because if we act without cleaning up after ourselves, clean up becomes a separate task all on its own! So, true, we're able to do a lot of tasks quickly, but if it's at the cost of adding another task (and a non-trivial one at that!) at the end of a certain span of time, I think it defeats the purpose.

So there. Three simple and easy to follow principles. I hope I can keep these in mind as I go about my day today, and the rest of my days in the weeks, months and years to come. I want to constantly make myself better in a non-superficial way, and these three are a good first step!

Have a great day today!

FifthStitch Plays: Hearthstone - A newbie's tier list of hero powers part 1

So recently, I've been playing a lot of Hearthstone. It's a fun addicting card game by Blizzard (makers of other great and equally addicting games like the RTS game Starcraft and the MMORPG World of Warcraft) and it really caters to the mad strategist in me. I thoroughly enjoy my card games - I have at one point played Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and, obviously, Magic the Gathering, and had a lot of fun playing all of them - and Hearthstone is no exception.

Mull to Five: Brainstorming

A pair of 2-1-0s, placing 4th in one and 3rd in the other.

Now that's what I call a successful tournament run! But that's all icing on top of a very sweet cake however, because of the myriad of lessons I have learned last Wednesday (November 28, 2012), both from the tournament itself and from some brainstorming and discussions I had with an experienced player (and two-time first round opponent, and with whom I lost to both times, haha). Tossing ideas around with someone more experienced is a really good exercise; you might end up revisiting ideas you could have dismissed sometime ago on account of being too weak or too clunky. Like I almost always do, though, I might be getting too ahead of myself. I'm really excited to talk about my tournament exploits this week, all the more so because I wasn't able to play all that much last week, so let's begin.

Mull to Five: Deck Tech - Jund Midrange Part 2

This is part 2 of my Jund Midrange Deck tech article. When I started writing this, I didn't think it would go overboard and be extremely long, so long in fact that it might have been unreadable and boring. I decided to just split the article in two, which also gives me an excuse not to write an article today (kidding). Anyways, I hope that decision would allow you to have fun reading my article as much as I had fun writing it. Enjoy!

Mull to Five Extras

I've been a huge fan of Gavin Verhey, I've been using his deck construction techniques in my own deck-building pursuits. Today he wrote an article about how to build a sideboard, and I would just like to share it with my readers.

Click on the link below to jump to his article originally published in magicthegathering.com on November 20, 2012:

Zero to Sixty:
Zero to Fifteen

Mull to Five: Deck Tech - Jund Midrange Part 1

This is part 1 of my Jund Midrange Deck tech article. When I started writing this, I didn't think it would go overboard and be extremely long, so long in fact that it might have been unreadable and boring. I decided to just split the article in two, which also gives me an excuse not to write an article on Friday (kidding). Pardon if it doesn't feel like it was meant to be written in two parts, and I hope you would go back on Friday and read  the rest of the article.

Anyways, I hope that decision would allow you to have fun reading my article as much as I had fun writing it. Enjoy!

So I've decided on a new name. Mull to Five.

Friday Nights 2: A new challenger has arrived!

2-2

Worse than last week, but better over all standings. Last week, as I had found out through the nifty Planeswalker Points website, I was 7th over all, today I was 6th. Not bad, certainly improving, although I did use a different deck today, I would explain in a moment why. I think it was also because the tourney was smaller, and I did get less Planeswalker Points, but again, I'd take it! Getting there, I guess.

Friday Nights 1: It begins

2-1-1

Not bad for my first solo FNM. Not exactly a good showing, but I'd take it!

The Life and Times vol. 10: Crossing Over Space and Time PART TWO

Whew, so... Part 2. Yeah, I'm still having a blast playing this game, so let's talk about it a bit more shall we?

The Life and Times vol. 9: Crossing over Space and Time

Or crossing over Street Fighter and Tekken, whichever S and T you feel like crossing over. I prefer the latter.

The Life and Times vol. 8: No Clever Title

Hello. No clever titles this time, no pointless banter before I begin. For once, I'd be Ryan, and just Ryan. No fifthStitch jovial undertones, just me speaking my heart out.

Because after a long struggle of trying to hold everything in, I've got a lot to speak out.

Imagination's Creations: Little Sister Syringe Day 1

Hello avid readers of my blog (if you exist)! Welcome to a new blog series I'd like to call Imagination's Creations, where I indulge one of my many many hobbies: model building. Before I proceed though, let me just say, I'm not really a professional or whatever when it comes to building models and other craftsy artsy things; in fact, prior to what I'm about to show you, it's been a couple of years since I last built something out of scratch (as opposed to, say, building a model kit). However, and not that I'm bragging, but friends tell me that I might have some aptitude in prop building, and it's been something I've been wanting to get into anyway, so might as well run with it!

Nothing ventured nothing gained right (is it obvious that this aphorism is slowly becoming one of my favorites)?

The Life and Times vol. 7: End of an era

That's right folks, two Life and Times in the span of a month! Or maybe a week, I can't really remember (of course, I could have just looked at the timestamps but nooo... Too lazy...). Anyways, why the sudden urge to present you guys with another awesome edition of The Life and Times?

Simple. The end of an era has arrived. The End of Eternity has begun.

Reflections: Good Friday

[The following post, I know, might be quite controversial for some. I don't mean to spark any debates, leave those to apologists, but I still felt compelled to share this message with you here. If you don't agree, then I ask for your respect, but if you do, then all I simply ask for is your time to read. Thank you.]

Something to write about: Google Chrome as music player?

Okay, so maybe I'm the only one who hasn't really noticed yet, but darn is the Google Chrome Webstore filled with awesomeness. Okay okay, I'm probably exaggerating, and the webstore is probably more like a blatant rip-off of Apple's Appstore, but still, it's pretty nifty to be able to play music on your browser while playing some mini games and researching the chords to the most recent Mandy Moore hit I See The Light (uhh, yeah, I think I may have enjoyed Tangle a little too much, hehe).

Like I won't be able to do this with my browser anyway. But meh.

The Life and Times vol. 5

Hey! It's volume 5!

So what do I have to say? Well, nothing much, just felt like updating this blog. I've been reading my older blog posts though, particularly my very first. It felt nostalgic of course, but the beauty in reading blogs like this is seeing how much I've changed over the years (two years? maybe less, but hey, its still more than one so it deserves to be plural) (and yes, I still put parenthetical side comments, guess some things don't change). Call me sick, but I really get a kick at temporal time travel; putting myself in my shoes back when I first wrote something.

Something to Write About: Ball-jointed what now?

I was asking around what accessories came with the S.H.Figuarts Emperor Kiva, and Murakami Night was gracious enough to link me to this site. It was in Japanese, so given the option to translate, translate I did. Now, I dunno if this was meant to be like this or if the translator failed, but it did make me do a double take.

Be sure to click the image to zoom in. You could say this is an if you see it, you'd shit bricks, but instead of shitting you'd be laughing like crazy and instead of bricks... I dunno, carbon dioxide maybe? What kind of gas do you expel anyway when you laugh? And no, not methane, I meant from the front end.

BALL-JOINTED WHAT NOW?

For the uninitiated, yes, collecting figures like these is a hobby of mine. I make comics out of them, in case you don't know yet, and I'm planning to include this particular figure right here. I know you can't see the figure much, but if you'd Google S.H.Figuarts Emperor Kiva, you'd see how golden majestic this dude is (and no, no image, go and Google, it builds character).

Anyway, that's all for that. Hope that got some laughs outta you. Sure got some outta me, haha.

Something to write about: Video Games

Okay, so I haven't been writing much in my personal blog recently; ironic that my literary dump (supposedly the less prolific of my two main blogs) has been given more attention to lately. See, I've been making comics and blah blah blah... I've told mountains of stuff about that before? Really? Hmm... Well... How about my photography then? It's amateurish but I'm getting the- I've told you of that too? Hmm... Well, I guess now you know why I haven't been updating this blog recently huh?

I know! Let's talk about video games! Wheeee... Actually, I'm a bit lazy right now, so I'd save the long discussion on gaming philosophy and some such for another blog post. Right now, I wanna talk about games, fighting games to be exact. For people who know me personally, it shouldn't be news to you that I love love LOVE fighting games. 3D Fighters, 2D Fighters, even timing based fighters like the Naruto Ultimate Hero franchise and the Dissidia series are all fair game for me, even if I'm still getting the hang of 2D fighters (I'm looking at you Super Street Fighter Four! Oh you've got Juri? Well, I guess you're forgive then... Hmm...). That said though, I've been eying a new 2D fighter for the PS3. You'd be surprised the game is for the PS3, judging by its hardcore 2D graphics, but I'm a staunch believer that graphics don't make a game (most of the time), so in my opinion, it's not going to be a crutch (maybe more of a Segway. You didn't get the joke? Ah well... Erm... Awkward). Anyway, here's a video ripped directly from YouTube!

SEE THE AWESOME

Recovered from the awesome already? As you can see, it doesn't have the most realistic of styles in terms of graphics, physics and game play (unlike the popular Namco games with boob physics), but still, those visuals, for some reason, just do it for me. In short, it rocks. Rocks hard.

From the cast shown on the video, my favorites would be Noel and Alucard. I didn't do much research on them yet, as frankly I'm a little too lazy, but for some reason, these guys remind me of my favorite characters from a similar fighting game from Type Moon, Melty Blood. For those of you who wants to know who these favorite characters are, well they're, Ceil and Hisui (Shiki counts too, but not as much). I know I know, you don't see how they're related, and neither do I, but hey, you're not writing this blog now aren't you?

Anyway, all kidding aside, the game actually reminds me of a similar 2D fighter, Guilty Gear. I actually loved that game a lot, and I rocked Sol and Ky like I know how to rock Sol and Ky, even if I actually suck at that game. If so, then I'm sure BlazBlue would be a rocking good time!

I suck at 2D fighters in general, but there's something about me and 2D fighters that makes me go back to the genre, like an old fling that keeps on coming back, an itch I really like to scratch. I don't really understand but 2D fighters hold that kind of allure for me, like it's some sort of unexplored frontier, the next step in my quest to hone my skills in fighting games. Just hope I find someone to play against though, as I would definitely not like playing against the AI all the time (besides, if I do, I'd most certainly lose 110 percent of the time...).

Well, that would be all. Glad I found something to write about, whew; been itching to write a blog for sometime now, hehe

P.S.: So I actually forgot to give the name of the game. It's BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Get Hyped.
